GLOBAL BIOTECHNOLOGY LEADERS TO UNITE IN WINNIPEG - NEWS RELEASE

WINNIPEG, CANADA – This September, the bioscience world is coming together in Winnipeg with one mission: feeding nine billion people on our current agricultural footprint - through innovation and collaboration.

‘Solutions Start Here’, the 2017 ABIC conference takes place September 25th to 28th at the RBC Convention Centre Winnipeg. ABIC, the Agricultural Bioscience International Conference is the premier global meeting that promotes innovation in bioscience for sustainable food, feed, fibre and fuel security as the climate changes.

“We are thrilled to partner with LSAM and ABIC to welcome the world to Manitoba,” said the Honourable Ralph Eichler, Minister of Agriculture, Government of Manitoba. “We are working to create an environment that accelerates growth in the agriculture, agri-food and agri-product sector, capitalizing on Manitoba’s natural and economic advantages. Exchanging knowledge, globally, in forums like this, substantially increases our likelihood of success.”

‘Solutions Start Here - ABIC 2017’ promises to be a uniquely Manitoban experience. “We are leaders in collaboration in this industry in the world,” says Tracey Maconachie, President, Life Sciences Association of Manitoba (LSAM), “and we plan to showcase our style and our success stories in the hopes of opening new pathways here, and elsewhere.”

The conference has four tracks that are critical to our collective future: 1) increasing nutrient production 2) reducing waste 3) making more effective use of resources, and 4) shifting diets - to feed 9 billion people. Within each track, leaders will explore: strategic priorities; the role of policy; and, new collaboration models; toward tangible solutions.

ABIC 2017 is opening new discussions around the solutions needed to feed the world. “We’re working to include policy makers; investors; industry leaders in agriculture, bio-tech, retail foods, and supply chain management; communications; and researchers,” adds Maconachie. “We’re taking the conversation from the lab and the field, through the supply chain to the kitchen tables of the world.”

The conference is also moving out of the city, to farm sites and production and research facilities, to highlight Manitoba’s local expertise. Excursions out from the RBC Convention Centre Winnipeg include Kelburn Farm, Richardson International’s 700-acre research farm and crop development centre, located just south of Winnipeg in the Red River Valley; and a tour and dinner at the turn-of-last century, 40 acre, Mennonite Heritage Village.

The ABIC 2017 ‘Solutions Start Here’ itinerary wraps up with tours of state of the art facilities, including the Composites Innovation Centre, Richardson Centre for Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals and Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre.

“We have world-class facilities and collaborations in Manitoba that we want to showcase, to help inspire the broadest creativity we can, to address one of the greatest challenges of our time,” says Maconachie.
