Students become scientists to celebrate science in Manitoba

WINNIPEG, October 30 – From Oct. 30 to Nov. 6, students in elementary and middle schools across Manitoba are leaving their classrooms and becoming scientists for a day. The Life Science Association of Manitoba (LSAM) is hosting interactive student tours of Manitoba’s major biotech facilities. The tours celebrate National Biotechnology Week: a time dedicated to Canada’s scientific ingenuity.

"Students who love science fall in love with science at a very early age," says Tracey Maconachie, President of LSAM. "National Biotechnology Week inspires students to love what they’re learning. And passion is what drives the work Manitoba’s scientists and researchers do daily."

Students will learn about Manitoba’s science sector and create DNA extractions, cross-breed plants, dissect pig hearts, and see how neurological disorders are diagnosed. These activities reflect the real work scientists and researchers in Manitoba do every day.

Student tours will take place at:

  • Conviron
  • Composites Innovation Centre
  • Monsanto Canada
  • Richardson Centre for Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals
  • Government of Canada’s Cereal Research Centre
  • St-Boniface Hospital Research Centre Youth BIOlab
  • University of Manitoba’s Biomedical Engineering department
  • Inner City Science Centre
