The U of M and Cancer Care are collaborating to create the Research Institute of Oncology & Hematology, which will bring together all pillars of cancer and blood disorder research, according to CancerCare president and CEO Dr. Sri Navaratnam.
CancerCare Manitoba and the University of Manitoba hope a new partnership will bring improvements to both research into the disease and care for patients.
“We did have a joint institute previously, started in the 1960s, which only focused on the cell biology, which means cancer research at the cell level,” explained Navaratnam. “Now we’re expanding this scope to include other types of research, clinical research, clinical innovation and patient experience.
"So any type of cancer research that happens in Manitoba could be centred in this institute.”
The expanded cancer research platform at the institute will include discovery research, research into prevention, clinical innovation and health services and research on patient experience.
“Cancer research is always evolving and in the 60s it was mainly focusing on the cells,” said Navaratnam. “Now it’s much beyond that.”
The Research Institute of Oncology & Hematology will be located at the CancerCare Manitoba Research Centre.
