Intelligent Hospital Systems Sells Fourth RIVA Chemo Automated Compounding System in Canada

WINNIPEG, Manitoba--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Intelligent Hospital Systems (IH Systems), maker of RIVA automated IV compounding technology, today announced it has sold a fourth RIVA Chemotherapy system in Canada. The RIVA Chemo system will be installed in a new hospital being built in northwest Toronto.

The automated compounding system will be the fourth RIVA Chemo unit in Canada. It joins two other RIVA systems currently producing live patient doses in Ontario – at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre in Barrie and Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto. Additionally, a RIVA Chemo system is installed in Manitoba.

“RIVA Chemo continues to grow its market presence in Canada because the technology helps hospitals ensure the accuracy of complex medications for cancer patients, for whom safety is absolutely critical,” said Dr. Niels Erik Hansen, president and CEO of IH Systems. “The fact is, hospitals all over the world are learning that pharmacy automation not only provides a higher standard of patient care, but also improves efficiency and reduces costs.”

RIVA, the only fully-automated IV compounding system available on the market today, prepares syringes and IV bags in a USP<797>-compliant aseptic environment. The RIVA Chemo system is engineered specifically to handle the complicated and toxic formulations used in IV infusion therapy. The system operates with negative-to-ambient air pressure to protect pharmacy staff from exposure to cytotoxic chemicals, and labels all dispensed doses with patient-specific information to ensure accurate administration.

Since its introduction in 2008, RIVA systems globally have safely and accurately prepared more than 3 million medication doses, including more than 18,000 chemotherapy doses. The system’s safety record has been demonstrated by more than 161,000 routine quality control checks that have found no contamination in compounds produced by the machines. RIVA performs multiple weight and product barcode checks during compounding, and provides a complete electronic audit trail that identifies and labels every dispensed dose.
