First there was the St. Boniface General Hospital, then there was the St. Boniface Hospital & Research Foundation, and then came the St. Boniface General Hospital Research Centre - which has evolved into a research campus that includes the Sakharov MRI Centre and the I.H. Asper Clinical Research Institute.
Together they create and maintain a tradition of excellence in medical care, education, and research. The St. Boniface Hospital & Research Foundation was established in 1971 as part of the centennial celebrations of the Hospital. The Foundation acts as the primary fundraising body for the St. Boniface General Hospital Inc., and promotes excellence in health care research related to the prevention and treatment of disease, the promotion of good health, and improvements in patient care. All with the overriding objective of improving individual quality of life and respecting the individual.
The St. Boniface General Hospital Research Centre is a result of the emphasis that both the Hospital and Foundation place on medical research.
The Research Centre has four areas of interest:
1) The Canadian Centre for Agri-food Research in Health and Medicine (CCARM) is dedicated to understanding the health-related benefits of nutraceuticals, functional foods and natural health products (health food).
2) The Division of Neurodegenerative Disorders (DND) is housed within the Dr. John Foerster Centre for Health Research on Aging located at the St. Boniface General Hospital Research Centre.
3) Widely regarded as one of the preeminent basic cardiovascular research programs in the world, St. Boniface's Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences is led by Dr. Pawan Singal and is a leading force in the fight against heart disease at the cellular and molecular levels.
4) Clinical Research which operates under the notion that scientific discoveries must be translated into practice to improve human health. However, basic research can also be stimulated when clinical researchers uncover questions while investigating new treatments.
