What is FibreCITY?

Canadian and global manufacturers in the automotive, construction, aerospace, and other sectors are generating a growing market pull for composite materials that can be used to create lighter, stronger low-cost products with reduced costs and energy consumption.

The Composites Innovation Centre in Manitoba has taken a global leadership position in demonstrating that biocomposites derived from biomass such as the major agricultural crops flax and hemp can play a significant part in meeting that demand. The goal of FibreCITY is to enhance a vertically integrated bio-fibre enterprise beginning with the breeding of crop varieties that are tailored for fibre content and quality. These crops will be grown by contract producers at a premium price, and supplied to a regional processing pipeline for the emerging value added biomaterials sector.
